Dear Winchester Churches Nightshelter Supporter

Winter Fuel Allowance

A local rector, a keen supporter of the Nightshelter, suggested that some of the better off members of the community might be able to forego their winter fuel allowance and donate this instead to charity – to the Nightshelter who can use the money to ensure someone homeless has a bed, the warmth of a home albeit temporary, together with food, support and camaraderie. We have just finished our building extension works so that we can now accommodate 17 people every night, and demand is still extremely high.

Do you have experience of working with people with alcohol and other drug problems?

We are looking for someone who would enjoy working with homeless people with alcohol and other drug problems (primarily alcohol related). You would be working at the Nightshelter with clients individually or in small groups, encouraging engagement, and enhancing motivation to address their difficulties, and signposting them on to appropriate agencies. You will need experience in this field, and will be meeting and working with a varied client group for 2–3 hours per week in the morning. For further details, or if you would like to learn more about our work, please telephone the office on 01962 862050 (9.00 am–2.00 pm) or see www.wcns.org.uk or Email: This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it

Small modern TV, about 19” or 22” with a flat screen – we are on the lookout should anyone have a spare one?

Keen gardeners wanted – we have very generously been offered a largish allotment outside Winchester and before we agree to take it on we will need someone keen to assist in running it. We foresee residents working on the allotment to provide fresh vegetables for the Nightshelter.  It would probably involve one or two days a week during the summer and one day a week for the rest of the year. Initially it would be unpaid, but we hope to source funding for this project.

Sunday afternoon opening – We hope to open the Nightshelter earlier on Sunday afternoons from 4 pm when most of the shops and the Discovery Centre are shut. We will need additional volunteers to assist our paid members of staff, from 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm on Sunday afternoons. As always we need other volunteers at all times of day or night, so please do make contact if you wish to learn more about our work.

With very many thanks for your help and support,

Michèle Price
